For example, DropBox Inc. has been working with many different customers to design, engineer and manufacture tissue culture labs. You may be asking yourself, what is tissue culture and why is it important? Today's blog will help answer those questions!
Tissue culture is the process of taking small pieces of plant tissue and placing them under controlled nutritional and environmental conditions in an artificial environment to produce clones of that plant by growing new tissue. There are four primary stages:
Stage 1: Establishment
The plant tissues (also called explants) are established in the appropriate in vitro. In order for this to be done, the explants must be sterilized and done so under the proper, sterile conditions. This prevents a microorganism from affecting the process. The explants are then introduced to the culture.
Stage 2: Multiplication
In this stage, the plant material is divided again and placed into a material that supports plant growth (also known as the medium). The medium includes components such as regulators and nutrients. This stage is what causes the rapid development of tissue and the production of multiple shoots. Shoots are stems including their appendages, the leaves and lateral buds, flowering stems and flower buds.
Stage 3: Rooting
And in this phase? You guessed it: plant roots begin to grow! Hormones are required in order to stimulate this. During this stage, complete plantlets begin to form.
Stage 4: Acclimatization
In the final stage, the plantlets must be acclimatized to a normal growing environment. This typically involves moving them to somewhere like a greenhouse where they can be in open-air conditions with low humidity and higher levels of light.
Why Is The Tissue Culture Process In Demand?
There are many advantages to using the tissue culture process. These include:
- Speed - In a short amount of time, you can produce thousands of plantlets with a small amount of plant tissue.
- Health - Because plants that are produced during the tissue culture process are often free from disease, this can help prevent the spread of disease and virus in new plants.
- Flexibility - This process allows for plants to be grown all year round no matter what the season or weather is.
- Space - Since the tissue culture process does not require an excessive amount of space, ten times the amount of plants can grow in one-tenth of the space of traditional growing operations.
- Variety - New varieties of plants are produced, cultivated and introduced to the market at a higher speed.

DropBox Inc.'s design for a tissue culture lab is focused on separate spaces that are dedicated to each stage of the process with features that support those stages. For example, tissue culture requires a dedicated air system and separated space for temperature control. We utilize an externally mounted HVAC for dehumidification control and conditioning of the space. The HVAC is "single pass" to reduce contamination. It also can be used to create positive pressure to keep the space clean.
The sterilization/transfer section typically requires cleaner air and is separated from the prep/wash section. The sterilization/transfer air passes back through the preparation/wash space with an exhaust system. The exhaust hood, which is based on Class II biosafety, laminar flow, will extract air and any additional air will be drawn back through the door louver.
