When it comes to Blast Resistant Modules (BRM) there are a wide range of things to consider prior to a purchase or rental. In this week’s edition of the Shipping Container Mods Blog we'd like to take a look at some of the key features to consider before having your BRM delivered.
BEFORE YOU BUY, RENT OR LEASE:
The most important thing to consider before you buy, rent, or lease a Blast Resistant Module is the engineering, design, and construction of the BRM. A top-notch BRM comes with close and sturdy spacing regarding its wall studs. If the studs in your BRM are too far apart, the building’s walls regardless of how thick the steel is are vulnerable to severe damage in the event of an explosion. At DropBox Inc., all of our shipping container modifications – BRMs included – are engineered, designed, and built to meet the most rigorous of construction standards. Complete with all steel exterior and skeletal framing, our blast resistant modules are built with the safety of workers and longevity of the product in mind.
Outside of the steel frame itself, it’s important to look at all of the building’s amenities like floor plans, light fixtures, electrical/plumbing design and all other interior fixtures. Specialty features in the BRM units provided by DropBox Inc. are built to sustain the wear and tear of everyday use, as well as not to become a hazard in the event of an explosion.
WHY ARE PSI OVER RATINGS SO IMPORTANT?
While amenities like a wide range of floor plans, cabinetry, and restrooms are nice when it comes to blast resistant modules, the PSI Over Ratings are the key feature. Utilizing decades of collective experience in the engineering, designing and building of shipping container modifications, DropBox Inc. knows that when it comes to BRM units, the safety of workers is where the buck stops. Regardless of the floor plan, the PSI Over Rating is what really protects your workers in the event of an explosion.
WHAT ABOUT THE REGULATIONS?
Even though there have been several explosions over the years – such as recently where in Crosby, Texas a chemical plant exploded after Hurricane Harvey – there is no official regulatory board to monitor BRM builders’ claims to a BRM unit’s durability. It is important to closely consider the company and products you choose to buy, rent, or lease from.

Portable Solutions Group (PSG), parent company to DropBox Inc. and Modular Security Systems Inc. (MSSI), companies that serves the industrial, commercial and military markets with products that help project managers, site operators, procurement professionals and end users safely and securely furnish their jobsites, plants and man camps, is pleased to announce that it has opened a new sales and distribution office in Sulphur, LA.
PSG chose Sulphur, a city of around 26,000 in the far southwestern corner of the state, for its new facility because of its close proximity to the vast oil-refining and chemical-manufacturing operations that are headquartered in the area, most notably in the cities of Lake Charles and New Orleans, LA, and the Texas towns of Houston, Port Arthur and Beaumont.
“Where we’re located on the Gulf Coast, rapid response and service are very important,” explained Micah Areno, Senior Business Development Manager for PSG. “Being near where a lot of refineries and chemical producers are located gives us quick accessibility to their operations and allows us to maximize our reaction time through our 24-hour service capabilities. We have designed this facility to be a one-stop shop, so we have a yard that’s fully capable of performing service and repairs, while it’s also a staging area for product transportation to customer sites.”
While the new facility will eventually be a distribution point for all of PSG’s product lines, including mobile offices, decontamination showers, temporary storage containers, portable toilet facilities, among others, it is currently handling two of PSG’s most prominent products.
The first is the Blast Resistant Module (BRM) from PSG subsidiary DropBox Inc. BRMs are critical pieces of equipment at refineries and chemical-production sites where there is the threat of deadly explosions. When there is a heightened risk of explosion, site personnel can enter the BRM and know that they will be protected from harm.
“The need for BRMs is growing every day as more and more facilities are being required to have them on-site,” said Areno. “OSHA is driving a lot of the requirements to have BRMs instead of non-blast buildings. In a lot of people’s eyes, a blast building is just a blast building, but we’ve looked at how the industry has handled the requirements to this point, the challenges and concerns that people have, and are focusing on what they need and want from BRM companies.”
DropBox Inc's BRMs are API 753-compliant and are constructed of steel-reinforced roof and wall panels. They can be custom-built to customer specifications, or either purchased or leased in standard 12’ by 40’ and 12’ by 20’ sizes. Multiple 12’ units are capable of being linked together to make a larger complex. All can be outfitted with a number of options depending on the needs of the facility, including control rooms, ports for incoming electrical and communication services, air conditioning, lockers, showers, break rooms with kitchenettes, restrooms, windows, cargo doors, emergency lighting, insulation, smoke detectors, and washers and dryers.
PSG can custom build a BRM to meet the specific needs of the client, and offer a variety of configurations to meet the customer’s layout needs, including multiplex units that can be stacked two stories high.
The second product line currently being distributed from the Sulphur facility is the Modular Access Control (MAC) Portals from PSG subsidiary Modular Security Systems, Inc. (MSSI). The patented MAC Portals are reconfigured from modular solutions that are constructed of 16-gauge COR-TEN weathering steel and can be installed directly into the perimeter fencing at a construction site. They feature full-height, high-security, tamper-proof turnstiles, electronic entry/egress access-control technologies (proximity cards, card readers, RFID tags, hand geometry, iris scanners, etc.) and video-surveillance equipment.
The MAC Portals can also be either purchased or leased from MSSI and they can integrate with any commercially available software system to generate reports, track worker time, prevent theft and issue payroll records. This allows the site operator to know which employees are on-site and for how long, and to ensure that any non-approved people cannot enter the facility, which will decrease the chances that theft or vandalism will occur. Another key capability of the MAC Portals is that they are portable, so if the configuration of the plant were to be changed, they can be easily and quickly relocated to a new entry/exit point. During a site’s construction phase, they can also be relocated to new areas as construction progresses.
“We use equipment transport trailers to deliver our buildings with no cranes required for loading or offloading,” said Areno. “This ease of transportation is important, as it allows the BRM or MAC Portal to quickly be set up and made ready for use.”
Despite only being in operation since mid-September, the Sulphur facility has already lent support for the projects of two major PSG clients. First, it helped provide MAC Portals with a value in the millions of dollars and assisted in securing a large purchase order for BRMs from a global chemical and energy company for use during the buildout of a new petrochemical complex in southwest Louisiana. PSG is also supplying BRMs and MAC Portals to a global manufacturer and supplier of petrochemicals, polymers and fabricated building products that is based in the United States.
