For example, DropBox Inc. has been working with many different customers to design, engineer and manufacture tissue culture labs. You may be asking yourself, what is tissue culture and why is it important? Today's blog will help answer those questions!

Tissue culture is the process of taking small pieces of plant tissue and placing them under controlled nutritional and environmental conditions in an artificial environment to produce clones of that plant by growing new tissue. There are four primary stages:

Stage 1: Establishment

The plant tissues (also called explants) are established in the appropriate in vitro. In order for this to be done, the explants must be sterilized and done so under the proper, sterile conditions. This prevents a microorganism from affecting the process. The explants are then introduced to the culture.

Stage 2: Multiplication

In this stage, the plant material is divided again and placed into a material that supports plant growth (also known as the medium). The medium includes components such as regulators and nutrients. This stage is what causes the rapid development of tissue and the production of multiple shoots. Shoots are stems including their appendages, the leaves and lateral buds, flowering stems and flower buds.

Stage 3: Rooting

And in this phase? You guessed it: plant roots begin to grow! Hormones are required in order to stimulate this. During this stage, complete plantlets begin to form.

Stage 4: Acclimatization

In the final stage, the plantlets must be acclimatized to a normal growing environment. This typically involves moving them to somewhere like a greenhouse where they can be in open-air conditions with low humidity and higher levels of light.

Why Is The Tissue Culture Process In Demand?

There are many advantages to using the tissue culture process. These include:

      • Speed - In a short amount of time, you can produce thousands of plantlets with a small amount of plant tissue.
      • Health - Because plants that are produced during the tissue culture process are often free from disease, this can help prevent the spread of disease and virus in new plants.
      • Flexibility - This process allows for plants to be grown all year round no matter what the season or weather is.
      • Space - Since the tissue culture process does not require an excessive amount of space, ten times the amount of plants can grow in one-tenth of the space of traditional growing operations.
      • Variety - New varieties of plants are produced, cultivated and introduced to the market at a higher speed.
How DropBox, Inc. Can Help

DropBox Inc.'s design for a tissue culture lab is focused on separate spaces that are dedicated to each stage of the process with features that support those stages. For example, tissue culture requires a dedicated air system and separated space for temperature control. We utilize an externally mounted HVAC for dehumidification control and conditioning of the space. The HVAC is "single pass" to reduce contamination. It also can be used to create positive pressure to keep the space clean.

The sterilization/transfer section typically requires cleaner air and is separated from the prep/wash section. The sterilization/transfer air passes back through the preparation/wash space with an exhaust system. The exhaust hood, which is based on Class II biosafety, laminar flow, will extract air and any additional air will be drawn back through the door louver.

When companies need a sample to be analyzed, tested, etc., it can cause productivity to decrease due to the fact that they have to send the substance to a lab that's offsite. But what if you were able to just take that substance to a chemical laboratory that was on your jobsite instead? Thanks to DropBox Inc., that thought has become a reality with the creation of the modular chemistry lab.

No matter what your company's specific needs are, both the standard and custom models of the modular lab are built for the demand of your current operation. Each lab is pre-engineered and configured to meet the needs of the specific industry that the lab will be used for. This includes analytical laboratories, cannabis laboratories, and cGMP. As a result, lab technicians can perform their specific tasks onsite rather than having to waste time traveling to an offsite facility.

Finished in about half the time of traditional construction, DropBox Inc.'s modular labs are able to be quickly installed and immediately used on a jobsite. Whether you want yours to be hooked up to existing building connections or function independently, modular labs are site-ready for connection to power, water, and sewer as soon as they're delivered.

Each lab provides cleanroom process areas and laboratory/R&D space that are available as open areas or with specific zones for use separation. But because DropBox Inc. wants to ensure that each customer receives the product that fits their exact needs, our standard offerings are able to be customized in order to provide the ideal workflow for your company.

Overall, DropBox Inc. has created the modular chemistry labs to help increase the efficiency of companies' lab technicians, but the efficiency of their entire operations!

Think that you need a modular chemistry lab on your jobsite? To learn more, CONTACT US HERE or call 740.532.7822 today!

CBD Oil Extraction Techniques: What Happens In An Extraction Laboratory?

Posted on Tue, Aug 06, 2019 @ 10:08 AM

DropBox is continuing its pursuit to become more involved in the cannabis industry. By offering our modular labs, we can provide companies within this industry a place where they can test cannabis and extract CBD onsite. But once these companies have a lab to work in, how exactly do they extract CBD oil from the cannabis plant? Today’s blog will discuss the two primary extraction techniques that lab technicians use for this purpose.

The first, and most common, method that will be discussed is the supercritical CO2 extraction method.

The reason that this method is used so often is because it’s the safest way to extract CBD for human consumption. It's also because its high efficiency results in less waste during the process. However, the equipment that’s used to perform this method is very expensive. The most basic setups can cost around $40,000 to $100,000.

In order to extract CBD using the supercritical CO2 method, the liquid carbon dioxide’s temperature and pressure must be increased past the point where the liquid becomes ‘supercritical’ by using a compressor and heater. Being 'supercritical' means that the CO2 obtains the properties of both a gas and a liquid. This allows the supercritical CO2 to extract the CBD without damaging it and making it dangerous to consume. Next, the cannabis must be placed in an extractor and the supercritical CO2 is passed through it. This allows the supercritical CO2 to pull out the trichomes and terpene oils from the plant. The solution gets passed through a separator and is broken down into individual parts. The trichomes and terpene oils are sent to be collected while the CO2 goes to a condenser and is turned back into a liquid. The liquid CO2 is then placed in a storage tank so that it can be used for the process again.

In order to isolate the CBD, the chemical mixture goes through the processes of chromatography, winterization, and short path distillation. These processes allow lab technicians to remove unwanted phytochemicals, plant matter, and other compounds in order to have CBD in its purest form.

The second extraction method that’s used by professionals is by using ethanol to obtain CBD from the cannabis plant.

The process of ethanol extraction that is primarily used involves heating the cannabis plant to achieve something called decarboxylation. Decarboxylation is when carbon atoms are removed from a carbon chain. Once this occurs, the plant material that remains is soaked in ethanol for a long period of time. After a certain amount of time has passed, the liquid is filtered out of the plant material and left out in the open for the ethanol to evaporate. This removes water and oil-soluble compounds, such as chlorophyll, that can cause a bitter taste.

The downside to this extraction method is that not all of the ethanol can be removed from the CBD oil without the use of another filter. This can lead to the CBD oil losing more of its purity and effectiveness. However, the upside to this method is that it allows for the formation of esters. Since esters are easily absorbed by our bodies, they allow CBD to be easily absorbed by our bodies as well.

DropBox’s Class 1, Division 1 modular lab units have cleanroom process areas and laboratory/R&D space that provide the proper environment for CBD extraction.

Configured to meet the demands of your current operation, both standard models are customizable and configured to provide the ideal workflow. The extraction techniques that we discussed require large, heavy equipment. Our modular labs provide large, durable counters in order for lab technicians to work in a safe environment while avoiding damage to costly equipment. By using our product, companies are able to have an extraction lab that is easily transportable, quickly installed, ready to connect to power, water, and sewer, and finished in about half the time of traditional construction. DropBox Inc. allows lab technicians to perform their duties and quality control protocols in a remote setting!

DropBox Inc. Provides Portable Chemical Labs for Natural Gas Industry

From the early 2000's through today, DropBox Inc. has kept customers’ site-specific concerns top of mind. We work with our clients to create custom ISO shipping container modifications designed and engineered to to meet their needs. From self-contained running water restrooms and portable offices, work stations, equipment, and tool storage solutions to complex battery and inverter housing modules, we have consistently worked to develop products that are not only suitable for any environment, but that are also portable and turn-key and can be put into use within minutes of arriving onsite.

More recently DropBox Inc. has seen an increase in demand for custom portable laboratories for the natural gas industry. Between 2005 and 2014, US production of natural gas has increased by 70%, from 1.74 million barrels per day in 2005 to 2.96 million barrels per day in 2014 and the US has been the world's leading producer of natural gas liquids since 2010, when US natural gas production passed that of Saudi Arabia.

The increased use of natural gas for fleet vehicles as well as electric power generation has lead to an increase in drilling operations that are often regulated with strict environmental guidelines. These guidelines often require the regular testing of ground water in and around the drill site as well as regular testing of the gases extruded from the drill site for refining.

DropBox Inc. has worked with its customers in the industry to design, engineer, and manufacture portable labs that can be used in the often remote locations where drilling activities take place. Climate-controlled and complete with a wide range of lab accessories that can include storage space, cabinetry, counters, fume hoods, sinks, and proper ventilation. By building these units at our manufacturing facility in Worthington, Kentucky we can quickly and easily ship a turn-key lab solution to our customers.
