How to prepare your shipping container modification for cold weather

As many states are experiencing cold weather conditions, it's important to prepare for the extremely low temperatures. This is especially true for people who are considering purchasing a modified shipping container! At DropBox Inc., we offer many different customization options that will keep your shipping container modification product warm. And with proper preparation, you can protect your shipping container modification from harsh climates and increase its life span as a result. Here’s what you need to know to prepare your unit.

Insulation

Insulating your shipping container modification offers both immediate and long-term benefits such as reducing energy costs, preventing moisture condensation, safety and protection of personnel, and much more. Here are the benefits of different types of insulation.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Closed-cell foam insulation has the highest R-value of any insulation which measures an insulation's thermal resistance. The higher an insulation's R-value, the greater the effectiveness. When closed-cell foam insulation is applied, the insulation creates an air barrier to prevent air leakage. This prevents moisture and reduces the risk of mold. It's also a rigid material that helps reject water and is recognized as a flood-resistant material by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Closed-cell foam insulation has many other advantages including being able to be applied at very low temperatures, adding wall racking strength as well as impact resistance, and higher bond strength.

Mineral Wool

Mineral wool insulation has many benefits. It has a very high R-value and contains 70% recycled material, making it a greener product compared to the other insulation types. With a large density, mineral wool has superior sound-deadening properties. The stiffer batts don’t tend to flop over as easily, making it easier to put in place, and they don’t require staples or wire to keep them in place. It’s also hydrophobic and fire resistant, so it won’t absorb water, won't encourage the growth of mold and mildew, and can act as a fire stop.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is a commonly used type of insulation, partially because it's affordable. Overall, it has a good R-value. Since it's popular among the general public, this insulation type is available in many different sizes and with or without a paper facing. It’s also lightweight, made with with 20-30% recycled content, and easy to install in a wide range of circumstances, often with just a tack nailer.

Generators

To support loss of power, DropBox Inc. can manufacture shipping container modifications to include generators with manual transfer switches. This will not only keep your build heated, but it will also keep your appliances and tools connected to power and functioning properly. For example, by having a generator, you can keep your HVAC running and increase your protection against mold and mildew.

PEX Piping

DropBox Inc. utilizes PEX piping for freshwater lines. There are many benefits to using PEX piping over other materials (i.e. copper, PVC, galvanized steel). PEX offers resistance to breakage caused by freezing by being able to expand. It's also flexible and easier to install, reducing the need for holes and notches to accommodate the tubing and eliminating the need for many elbows and other transition fittings.

HVAC Systems

Another way to keep your shipping container modifications warm during the cold months is to install an HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. There are many other different benefits to having this type of system installed including improved indoor air quality and moisture consistency. An HVAC system can improve air quality by constantly exchanging the indoor air with fresh, outdoor air that is also filtered for the best quality possible. And whether you're in a climate that changes every season, or in a climate that remains constant, you can always run the risk of retaining moisture. So, to reduce the chances of mold growth, the HVAC system pulls warm, moist air out and sends dry, cool air inside.

What Base Should You Sit A DropBox Inc. Shipping Container On?

This means that it's immediately ready for use as soon as it arrives to your site and his hooked up to power. But before you can begin, it's important that the product is placed on the proper foundation in order for it to be used safely and effectively.

When placing your shipping container modification on your jobsite, the most important thing you must remember is to keep the structure on a dry, flat, and level base

If you rent/purchase a single-container build that will be moved often, then it's okay to place it directly on the ground. The same goes with a single-container build that will be sitting sedentary for a month to a year, but you must make sure that it remains level over time. However, if it will be placed in a location that's more long term, then it may be beneficial to place it on a gravel/concrete pad to be safe. Finally, if you choose to purchase a multi-container build, it's important to create a pier system or foundation due to the fact that the weight could case soil to shift.

By following these steps, you can increase the life of your shipping container modification and ensure the safety of yourself and others!

So you've purchased a DropBox Inc. ISO shipping container and are ready to use it on your jobsite. This product now belongs to you, and you can use it however you want. Our highly-skilled engineers work hard to ensure that each DropBox Inc. product is made to withstand the harshest conditions. However, how can you ensure that your shipping container remains in the top condition that you received it in? With anything that you own, it's important to care for your shipping container in order for you to get the most out of it. As it's used and exposed to the environment, your shipping container is going to require proper maintenance in order for it last a long time.

Luckily, DropBox Inc. has some tips on how to prevent long-term damage to your product:

1. Inspect and Repair Damages to the Container's Roof

When shipping containers are stacked on top of each other, this can sometimes cause dents to occur. As a result, dents can hold water that leads to the corrosion of the container. When these dents appear, it's important to repair each dent and paint them with rust proof paint. This makes it less likely for rust to appear and damage your shipping container.

2. Remove and Treat Rusted Areas

Although some steel is corrosion resistant, it doesn't mean that they're completely corrosion proof. Certain locations, such as near the ocean where salt air is common, can cause rust to occur more often. Therefore, any dent or scratch that appears must be sealed and painted in order to avoid corrosion.

3. Clean and Lubricate Doors and Handles

The more you use your shipping container, the more worn out the doors tend to get. To combat this, it's important for each door and their handles to be cleaned and greased in order to ensure that they work properly.

4. Examine Container Modifications

When modifying a shipping container to include things such as doors and windows, it increases its exposure to water and dirt. Make sure that you check the areas of your shipping container that have been modified and clean them whenever necessary. This helps avoid corrosion and lengthens the life of your product.

5. Make Sure the Container is on a Level Surface

When the shipping container is placed on a level surface, this prevents water from gathering and corrosion from developing underneath it. Instead, the water is able to be drained properly due to the fact that it isn't leaning to one side.
