Update: DropBox Inc. Nears Completion on $2.5 Million DHS Contract

Back in February, DropBox Inc. announced the award of a major contract with the Department of Homeland Security Division (DHS) Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD). The contract for the production of multiple shipping container modifications known as the On Dock Rail Straddle Portal (ODRSP) is the culmination of a partnership with Savannah River Nuclear Laboratory (SRNL) and the DHS that dates all the way back to 2010. These portals are designed to scan shipping containers that enter US ports for nuclear materials or "dirty bombs.” The prototype ODRSP was delivered to Akin, SC back in 2011.

After years of testing in South Carolina and Virginia, the purchase of these new ODRSP was approved and the contract for their construction was award earlier this year.

A few short months later, work modifying the multiple shipping containers is nearly complete and workers at DropBox Inc. can see the finish line for the project. However that doesn't mean these will be the last ODRSP modules to be built at our facility in Worthington, KY.

John Sturm, Vice President of Engineering, Design, and Risk Management for Portable Solutions Group, parent company to DropBox Inc,. stated, "This project is a great opportunity for our company and I'm excited to see what it will bring in the future.

As the scanning devices and electrical components are installed, visitors from the DHS and SRNL are expected to be at the manufacturing facility in Worthington for factory acceptance testing. Once that initial round of testing is complete, the unit will be disassembled and delivered piece-by-piece for permanent installation at one of the country’s largest ports of entry.

Through engineering, design, construction, delivery, and testing, DropBox Inc. and its employees have played a critical role in this national security project from beginning to end. Robert Slagel, President/CEO of DropBox Inc. recently said, “We have played a part in creating this unique security portal that will help protect our country’s ports of entry, and it's something to be very proud of.”
