CBD Oil Extraction Techniques: What Happens In An Extraction Laboratory?

DropBox is continuing its pursuit to become more involved in the cannabis industry. By offering our modular labs, we can provide companies within this industry a place where they can test cannabis and extract CBD onsite. But once these companies have a lab to work in, how exactly do they extract CBD oil from the cannabis plant? Today’s blog will discuss the two primary extraction techniques that lab technicians use for this purpose.

The first, and most common, method that will be discussed is the supercritical CO2 extraction method.

The reason that this method is used so often is because it’s the safest way to extract CBD for human consumption. It's also because its high efficiency results in less waste during the process. However, the equipment that’s used to perform this method is very expensive. The most basic setups can cost around $40,000 to $100,000.

In order to extract CBD using the supercritical CO2 method, the liquid carbon dioxide’s temperature and pressure must be increased past the point where the liquid becomes ‘supercritical’ by using a compressor and heater. Being 'supercritical' means that the CO2 obtains the properties of both a gas and a liquid. This allows the supercritical CO2 to extract the CBD without damaging it and making it dangerous to consume. Next, the cannabis must be placed in an extractor and the supercritical CO2 is passed through it. This allows the supercritical CO2 to pull out the trichomes and terpene oils from the plant. The solution gets passed through a separator and is broken down into individual parts. The trichomes and terpene oils are sent to be collected while the CO2 goes to a condenser and is turned back into a liquid. The liquid CO2 is then placed in a storage tank so that it can be used for the process again.

In order to isolate the CBD, the chemical mixture goes through the processes of chromatography, winterization, and short path distillation. These processes allow lab technicians to remove unwanted phytochemicals, plant matter, and other compounds in order to have CBD in its purest form.

The second extraction method that’s used by professionals is by using ethanol to obtain CBD from the cannabis plant.

The process of ethanol extraction that is primarily used involves heating the cannabis plant to achieve something called decarboxylation. Decarboxylation is when carbon atoms are removed from a carbon chain. Once this occurs, the plant material that remains is soaked in ethanol for a long period of time. After a certain amount of time has passed, the liquid is filtered out of the plant material and left out in the open for the ethanol to evaporate. This removes water and oil-soluble compounds, such as chlorophyll, that can cause a bitter taste.

The downside to this extraction method is that not all of the ethanol can be removed from the CBD oil without the use of another filter. This can lead to the CBD oil losing more of its purity and effectiveness. However, the upside to this method is that it allows for the formation of esters. Since esters are easily absorbed by our bodies, they allow CBD to be easily absorbed by our bodies as well.

DropBox’s Class 1, Division 1 modular lab units have cleanroom process areas and laboratory/R&D space that provide the proper environment for CBD extraction.

Configured to meet the demands of your current operation, both standard models are customizable and configured to provide the ideal workflow. The extraction techniques that we discussed require large, heavy equipment. Our modular labs provide large, durable counters in order for lab technicians to work in a safe environment while avoiding damage to costly equipment. By using our product, companies are able to have an extraction lab that is easily transportable, quickly installed, ready to connect to power, water, and sewer, and finished in about half the time of traditional construction. DropBox Inc. allows lab technicians to perform their duties and quality control protocols in a remote setting!

DropBox Inc. Design, Engineer, and Build Shipping Container Modifications.

Over the past few years trends in shipping container modification have pushed for new and improved building methods. Shipping container design, engineering, and manufacturing professionals on major industrial and commercial construction sites have found the the reuse of boxes becoming more and more advantageous. Through the use of engineering and design there are a wide range of temporary and permanent structures that can be built out of shipping containers.

The durability of a shipping container makes it the perfect building block.
You might already know
, but shipping containers are designed to last for decades and live a long life at sea for import/export purposes. Unfortunately, most end up taking a one-way trip to their destination and then end up stored in container yards at ports around the world. Given massive trade deficits in many countries, it can actually cost more to have the container shipped back as opposed to storing it and building a new one. This deficit is the main factor contributing to the quantity of unused containers that are available for shipping container modifications.

The structural integrity of shipping containers is unmatched when it comes to modular construction.
Shipping container modifications are built to be very sturdy and easily
transported via ship, truck, and rail. A steel frame is welded together and wrapped with corrugated corten steel as the walls and ceiling. Complete with marine grade wood flooring, containers are designed for the corners to bear all loads, which allows them to be very strong, easily shipped, and have the ability to be stacked up to 10 high.

Professionals in industrial and commercial construction projects with experience working with shipping container modifications understand that container structures, if designed and constructed properly, are very safe, strong, and can be used for a variety of applications. Shipping container modifications have been used all over the world for industrial and commercial projects, the military, and companies in a wide range of industries.

Over the last several years, Portable Solutions Group has provided jobs for many people in the Tri-State Area of Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, touting nearly 150 employees across all four operating companies. Portable Solutions Group (DropBox Inc.’s parent company) has recently begun placing “MADE IN THE USA” stickers on every unit that leaves its manufacturing facilities.

Company Owner/CEO/President, Robert Slagel, set this new initiative in place in an effort to show the company’s pride in being a company that creates jobs for hard-working Americans right here at home. Slagel says, "We just want folks to know that we are proud to be doing everything we can to help create jobs for our fellow countrymen – and that we’re doing what we can to help make America great again.”

DropBox Inc. Shipping Container Modifications & the ReUse of Shipping Containers for Jobsite Solutions

Posted on Mon, Nov 21, 2016 @ 08:11 AM

DropBox Inc. is an ISO shipping container modification company that provides standard containerized products and custom shipping container modifications for use at jobsites, plants and man camps worldwide. Standard products include blast-resistant modules, sanitation stations, shower trailers, mobile offices, mobile tool cribs, decontamination stations, chemical storage units, high-security storage units, laundry units and welding stations. DropBox has a long history of serving the industrial, commercial, and military markets with the best solutions to help make projects run smoothly, safely and securely.

The products built by DropBox Inc.are made from standard ISO shipping containers, constructed from 16 gauge COR-TEN weathering steel that are built to hold 67,000 pounds, and can be stacked up to nine containers high. Typically built overseas, these shipping containers are loaded full of TVs, Blu-Ray players, or whatever else is being shipped to the US. After being unloaded of their goods, the containers are usually stacked in a port or a lot and left unused. But here at DropBox Inc. we take those single-use containers and build a wide range of products from them.

While some businesses are built on the notion of thinking outside the box, DropBox Inc. focuses our business on thinking inside the box; that is, taking what others see as a single-use container and reconfiguring it and giving it multiple, pragmatic purposes for contractors around the world. We repurpose these containers by engineering, designing, and modifying them to act as ground-level offices, blast-resistant modules, portable self-contained restrooms, chemical storage facilities, and much more.

DropBox Inc. A Major Award Has Been... Ah... Well... Awarded

Posted on Mon, Oct 24, 2016 @ 14:10 PM

IMG_3472 (2).jpg

At DropBox Inc., a Portable Solutions Group Company, we build a lot of things out of shipping containers. From ground-level offices to self-contained restrooms to complex inverter/battery storage solutions, we deliver our portable containerized products to customers around the world. With all the engineering, designing, cutting, welding, drilling, hammering, caulking, cleaning, shipping, and delivering, it's serious business – and we take it very seriously. Even with all that seriousness, we still like to take time to poke a little fun at ourselves while congratulating colleagues on their personal successes.

Without the hard work of a long line of employees on the manufacturing floor and in the office spaces in all of our locations (Ironton, Ohio and Worthington and Wurtland, Kentucky), all of our companies’ overall success would not be possible.

In recognition of hard work and a "can-do" attitude, Portable Solutions Group and DropBox Inc. began awarding a “Major Award” akin to the major award received by "The Old Man" (Ralphie's dad) in 1983's A Christmas Story. The award has been given on a quarterly basis for a little over a year now. Previous winners have included Lisa Fryer, Jason Parlato, Robert Slagel, Jeremy Hamm, and Matthew Vonderheide.

The winner for the 3rd Quarter of 2016 is our very own Megan Coffey. Megan joined the PSG Team in the fall of 2015 and has made a tremendous impact as Executive Assistant to the CEO, Robert Slagel. In addition to handling most of the incoming calls to our companies, Megan functions as Mr. Slagel’s personal assistant and has taken on many tasks including but definitely not limited to guest reception, company-wide calendar management, coordinating meals for meetings and special events, office supplies orders, running errands for various members of our team, customer care, a variety of clerical functions, and even the occasional editing of marketing materials.

We'd like to Congratulate Megan for receiving the 3rd Quarter Major Award and wish her all the success possible moving forward with PSG and its group of companies.

Congratulations, Megan!
