DropBox Inc. has been exploring the idea of modifying ISO shipping containers into modular water treatment and bottling facilities. In collaboration with Norland International, a leading producer of state of the art bottled water equipment based in Nebraska, DropBox Inc. has conceptualized 3-D models of portable water treatment units. These modular facilities could be used in a number of settings where shipping bottled water is not otherwise feasible. "Military installations and natural disaster relief centers could see benefit in having units like these on site as opposed to having to ship in bottled water", stated Matt Vonderheide, DropBox Inc. Business Manager. "We've already received a number of calls about the idea and we're excited about the opportunity to build one."
These water bottling shipping container modifications are designed to pump otherwise undrinkable water from a lake, river, or stream, treat the water, and bottle it. Having these capabilities on site gives the end user a number of advantages including shipping time and cost savings. Other benefits of having water treatment and bottling units on location at military installations are the reduced risk of terrorist attacks on trucks transporting the water and a reduced risk of contamination in route.
At this time DropBox Inc. has yet to manufacture the first of these units but based on the 3-D renderings and engineering already underway it is only a matter of time.
